Originating from the Middle East, Turkish Baklava is a rich, sweet pastry made of layers of filo dough, filled with chopped nuts and sweetened with honey or syrup.   • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1 cinnamon stick

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F) and grease a baking dish.
  2. Layer 10 sheets of filo pastry in the baking dish, brushing each sheet with melted butter.
  3. Sprinkle a layer of mixed nuts over the pastry.
  4. Add another 2 sheets of filo pastry, buttering each sheet.
  5. Continue layering the nuts and pastry sheets, finishing with 10 filo sheets on top, making sure to butter each sheet.
  6. Cut the baklava into diamond-shaped pieces using a sharp knife.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for about 45-50 minutes or until golden brown.
  8. While the baklava is baking, make the syrup by combining the sugar, water, honey, and cinnamon stick in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes.
  9. Once the baklava is baked, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the syrup over the hot pastry.
  10. Allow the baklava to cool before serving, allowing it to soak up the syrup.
