Delicious Israeli Shakshuka

Shakshuka is a popular Middle Eastern and North African dish that is easy to make and bursting with flavor. This dish is perfect for breakfast, brunch, or any meal of the day. The hearty combination of poached eggs in a spicy tomato and bell pepper sauce makes it a comforting and satisfying meal.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 red bell pepper, diced

  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder
  • 1 can (400g) crushed tomatoes
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4-6 eggs
  • Fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and red bell pepper, and cook until softened.
  2. Add the minced garlic, ground cumin, smoked paprika, and chili powder. Cook for another minute until fragrant.
  3. Pour in the crushed tomatoes and season with salt and pepper. Simmer for about 10-15 minutes until the sauce has slightly thickened.
  4. Using a spoon, create small wells in the sauce and crack an egg into each well. Cover the skillet and let the eggs cook to your desired doneness.
  5. Sprinkle fresh parsley over the top and serve the Shakshuka hot with crusty bread or pita.
