Common fillings include refried beans, cheese, scrambled eggs, avocado, and sometimes a touch of Honduran crema.

This versatile dish can be enjoyed as a quick breakfast, a satisfying lunch, or a light dinner. Whether you prefer a classic vegetarian filling or want to add some meat like shredded chicken or chorizo, baleadas are easily customizable to suit your taste buds.

Recipe for Honduran Baleadas

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1 cup refried beans
  • 1 cup shredded cheese
  • 2 ripe avocados, sliced
  • 1/2 cup Honduran crema or sour cream
  • Optional: cooked chorizo, shredded chicken, or scrambled eggs

Instructions:

  1. In a bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the vegetable oil and warm water, mixing until a dough forms.
  2. Knead the dough on a floured surface for a few minutes, then divide it into 4 equal-sized balls. Roll each ball into a flat circle, about 6 inches in diameter.
  3. Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat and cook each tortilla for about 1-2 minutes on each side until lightly browned.
  4. To assemble the baleadas, spread a layer of refried beans on each tortilla, top with cheese, avocado slices, and your choice of additional fillings.
  5. Fold the tortillas in half and return them to the skillet to warm through and melt the cheese.
  6. Drizzle Honduran crema or sour cream over the top and serve hot.

Enjoy the authentic flavors of Honduras with these delicious baleadas! Bon appétit!
