Icelandic Plokkfiskur

Originating from Iceland, Plokkfiskur is a traditional fish stew made with cod or haddock, potatoes, onions, and sometimes other vegetables. The name 'plokkfiskur' translates to 'plucked fish' in Icelandic, as the dish was traditionally made by 'plucking' or breaking apart the fish into small pieces as it cooked.

This hearty and comforting dish has been a favorite in Icelandic households for generations, especially during the cold winter months when a warm and nourishing meal is most appreciated.

Ingredients:

  • 500g cod or haddock, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 500g potatoes, peeled and diced
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 cup milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish

Instructions:

  1. In a large pan, melt the butter over medium heat.
  2. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent.
  3. Add the diced potatoes and cook until slightly tender.
  4. Gently stir in the fish pieces and pour in the milk.
  5. Season with salt and pepper, then cover and simmer until the fish is cooked through.
  6. Using a fork, break the fish into smaller pieces while stirring to thicken the stew.
  7. Once the stew reaches your desired consistency, taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
  8. Serve hot, garnished with fresh chopped parsley.

Enjoy this delicious Icelandic Plokkfiskur with your family and friends, and savor a taste of traditional Icelandic cuisine!
